Attock/Lahore: A Lahore police team led by DIG Abdul Rahman conducted a security visit to Attock to examine the security measures at the district jail, where Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan is being held after his conviction in the Toshakhana criminal case.

Rawalpindi division police on Tuesday moved at least 85 PTI workers from the Attock jail to Rawalpindi’s Adiala prison. They were arrested following the May 9 riots.

Multiple prison vans carrying the PTI prisoners left the jail in secrecy, sources told Aaj News.

The authorities believed that allowing PTI workers to stay in jail while Imran Khan was there entailed a security risk, said the sources. Hence, they were removed from the prison and sent to Rawalpindi.

During their visit, the Lahore police team carefully assessed the security arrangements in and around the jail premises. They were accompanied by the District Police Officer (DPO), Deputy Commissioner, and other officials to thoroughly assess the security situation in the area which has been declared a red zone after Khan was moved to the prison on Saturday, immediately after his sentencing.

The authorities are keen to ensure enhanced security measures in light of the high-profile detainee’s presence in the jail. Imran Khan’s conviction and subsequent arrest have raised concerns about potential security threats.

JIT to visit Khan in Attock Jail

In a related development, a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) assigned to probe the May 9 violence is considering a visit to Attock prison to investigate the cases against Imran Khan.

The JIT has reportedly requested permission to conduct the investigation.

Lahore DIG Investigation Imran Kishwar told reporters on Tuesday that the JIT could visit Imran Khan in the jail or summon him for questioning with the help of jail authorities.

He said that during the investigation – before his arrest — the PTI chairman had expressed regret over the injury caused to the eye of DIG Operations Ali Nasir Rizvi, but that was not enough.

Rizvi was among the officers who were beaten up by the PTI protesters on May 9.

It is not enough to express regret, you need to pay for what you do, said Kishwar.

He emphasized the importance of fulfilling the requirements of the law and cooperation with the investigative process.

As the legal proceedings and investigations unfold, the situation in Attock remains under close scrutiny. The authorities are committed to maintaining strict security measures to ensure the safety and integrity of all involved parties during this critical period.
