Barbie more explosive than Oppenheimer at the box office
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer are poles apart in their subject matter and even their colour scheme. And after a same-day release, both are showing a gap in box office earnings as well.
Both movies hit their international markets on Friday, July 23, eyeing this year’s opening night record of $17.5 million made by Guardians of the Galaxy.
However, Barbie seemed to be winning with opening weekend’s totals projected to be around $150 million. However, Deadline reported that the figure could be as high as $161 million. The movie crossed $70 million in opening night and previews alone.
Meanwhile, Oppenheimer made 33 million on previews and opening night and $25.8 million on Saturday shaping up for a $80 million opening weekend. Deadline said that Oppenheimer is ‘certainly not a bomb in the box office sense’.
The Oppenheimer numbers are also affected by the fact that many IMAX screens are occupied by Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One which has made $118.2 million by now.
Barbie is a new franchise based on the Mattel doll coming on the back of a powerful marketing campaign that went waves of pink across the world. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer is about the father of the American atomic bomb.
