The Punjab’s Anti-Corruption Establishment conducted raids on Sunday to arrest Dr Uzma Khan, the sister of former prime minister Imran Khan, and her husband, Ahad Majeed, in a corruption case.

“The ACE officials conducted raids at their houses in Lahore and Layyah, however, no arrest had been made so far,” said an ACE spokesperson in a statement.

Investigation into the mega-corruption scandal was ongoing by ACE Layyah, it added.

Uzma is accused of alleged fraud in the purchase of 5,261-kanal of land in the Layyah district, apparently valued at Rs6 billion, for a mere Rs130 million. The complaint had been registered against the couple, said the ACE.

But the case accuses Dr Uzma and her husband, Ahad Majeed, of more than just monetary fraud.

The case says that the said land is at the site of the Greater Thal Canal project. The land was purchased in 2021-22 around the time the Asian Development Bank announced the project and the couple allegedly knew about the project’s approaching commencement in advance. The Greater Thal Canal was conceived to irrigate the barren lands of Punjab’s southern districts.

The case alleges that the couple coerced landowners into selling off their property at rates far below their market value. They then gained ownership of land through illegal property deeds and is held in the couple’s name.

A case had been filed by the land’s original owners in the local police station in Layyah at the time which has now led to a corruption case.
