Watch: Libyans enjoy Ramadan atmosphere in Tripoli’s old city
Libyans enjoy a variety of activities in Tripoli’s old city throughout the holy month of Ramadan. From Ramadan-themed decorations, children’s shows, historical performances to foosball, the old city was abuzz with citizens frequenting the area every night for entertainment.
Introducing historical characters and artifacts, the festivities are also a chance for children to get familiar with the country’s heritage.
“These programs take people back to the atmosphere of the old city in the past - as if we’re living in the past. You are going to see the Janissary army ( elite infantry units that formed during the Ottoman Empire) and the rebels walking in their costumes in the old city. You also see costumes from different time periods and historical personalities appearing from balconies so people get to know them,” Libyan artist, Anwar al Til said.
“The old city is beautiful and the children are happy with the atmosphere. They’re walking around, looking and asking questions, and I’m trying to explain to them,” another citizen, Mohammad Misrati added.
