Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 likely to get major design, cameras upgrade
The Z Fold device is considered the benchmark when it comes to foldable smartphones. It has come a long way since the arrival of the original Z Fold back in 2019.
With the fifth generation of the device – the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 – expected to arrive in the second half of the year, the new report claims major changes in the design and camera setup in the smartphone.
Let’s discuss the design change first. The already famous Z Fold 4 is getting a new hinge, which will allow the display to form a teardrop shape when closed, according to Naver.
The Korean site, which is renowned for design renders, claims that Samsung could adopt a “droplet”-style hinge which would result in less crease on the device.
The improvements to the crease were made over the years as you can see in the Z Fold 4, where it is less visible than in the original Z Fold.
Currently, both the Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 use a U-shaped hinge design that puts the display at a sharper angle when closed. The design puts more stress on the display which makes the crease prominent.
Meanwhile, Samsung’s competitors like Oppo and Motorola have already moved to a droplet-style hinge to avoid these issues.
According to SamMobile, the South Korean giant had the same technology back in 2016, but it hasn’t utilised it yet. It claims that the company wanted to wait until it could bring an IPX8 water resistance rating to the new display, which it first introduced to its third-gen folding devices in 2021. That could help makes Samsung’s folding phones stand out among the competitors.
Moreover, Naver reports that the new smartphone could also make both halves of the display sit flat against each other when the phone’s shut, unlike previous generations of the Galaxy Z Fold that leave a small gap.
This may make the device a little bit easier to fit in your pocket.
Huge camera upgrades
Finally, it is time for the 108-megapixel sensor to make its way to the Fold series. The 108MP camera has a huge success in the S series and it is now finally appearing in the new fold smartphone, according to The Pixel.
The Vietnamese publication claims that Samsung might ditch the 50MP camera for the 108MP primary camera. The new camera upgrade would result in increasing the weight of the device to around 275 grams from 263 grams.
Moreover, not only the Galaxy Z Fold 5 main camera but the telephoto camera is also rumored to get a boost.
The new camera setup may include a 108MP snapper, accompanied by a 64MP camera with 2x optical zoom and a 12MP ultrawide shooter.
It is still too early for any sort of official confirmation from the company in this regard. With the arrival of the Galaxy S23 series just around the corner, further details would be clear that where the company is heading in the smartphone market.
