PTI protests outside IG office against ‘weak’ FIR
The roads leading to the IG Punjab’s office were sealed after PTI announced a protest against the FIR registered for the assassination attempt on Imran Khan. ISF and Insaf Youth Wing had announced they would gather in front of the office against what it called a ‘fabricated FIR’.
In response police beefed up security around the office sealed the road in front of the office. Four DSPs and 4 SHOs were posted, with a heavy contingent at all three gates. The FIR of the attack on Imran Khan in Wazirabad last Thursday was leaked late on Monday after a tense delay that brought PTI and Punjab Police to a tense stand-off.
PTI leader Musarat Cheema decried the FIR as ‘fake’ immediately since it did not name any of the three people Imran Khan had accused of being behind the attack.
Imran Khan had accused the prime minister, interior minister and a senior army officer of organizing the attack in a televised address on Friday.
However, the authenticity of the FIR was confirmed after IG Punjab submitted it as part of a report in the Supreme Court today. On Monday, the court had told the IG to file the FIR immediately or suo moto notice would be taken in 24 hours.
The FIR named Sub-Inspector Amir Shahzad as the complainant and included terrorism charges. It also included sections 302, 304 and 440 of the penal code. It named Naveed, who was arrested soon after the attack, as the main accused.
However, the names PM Imran Khan had identified were not included. The inclusion of the names was said to be the main point of deadlock that prevented the FIR from being registered for four days.
