Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said on Tuesday that the world must come together to develop a mechanism to address climate catastrophes. He was speaking to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Monday.

“Rather than emphasising it as compensation, we should see it as collective responsibility,” Bilawal Bhutto said.

The foreign minister is in Sharm El-Sheikh along with PM Shahbaz Sharif for COP27, with ‘Loss and Damage’ being a key part of the agenda Pakistan is pushing. Loss and Damage refers to a mechanism where the world must come together to provide financial support for areas affected by the climate catastrophe.

He said that the next country to get affected like Pakistan should have more support from the world than Pakistan did. He said that the action against climate-related disasters, particularly for developing countries, must include loss and damage rather than just adaptation and mitigation, adding that he was happy that this issue had made it to the agenda.

The minister said the world needs to work together ‘or there won’t be a planet to save.’

Imran Khan attack must be investigated fairly

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also called for a free, fair and impartial investigation into the assassination attempt that injured the former prime minister last Thursday, reiterating his unequivocal condemnation fo\r the incident.

“Whatever anyone might think of Mr Khan domestically, this was an attack on a former prime minister and an attack on anyone should be investigated in an impartial and proper manner,” the foreign minister.

Condemnations have been pouring in since Imran Khan was injured in an assassination attempt in Wazirabad on Thursday, while leading his long march in pursuit of forcing early elections in the country.

PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said Bilawal had taken a ‘mature’ position on the issue.

He added that the protesters arrested for demanding a fair investigation should be released.
