Morale booster, proud, fantastic, and splendid are some of the words used for the Pakistan cricket team that beat archrival India in the super four stage of the Asia Cup on Sunday.

The victory against the top team in the world comes as the country back home deals with flash floods that have killed 1,314 people since mid-June.

“Alhumdulillah - this team of champions delivered in a nail-biting game,” Pakistan cricket team Captain Babar Azam said in a tweet in which he shared key moments from the match. “This one is for all those people back in our Pakistan fighting with the floods.”

Tributes started to pour in after the thriller contest.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who often chants the Pakistan Zindabad slogan after his speeches, posted the flag emoji in a tweet.

Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan was all praise for the team, saying that it was “a much-needed morale booster for the nation at a difficult time”.

“You have made us all proud team Pakistan,” Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa was quoted as saying in a tweet post.

PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz said the men in green brought joy to the people in such difficult times.

Umar Gul, former Pakistani pacer and now Afghanistan bowling coach, lauded all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz and Mohammad Rizwan’s performances.

PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja explained how Pakistan played. “Pak was tested on many fronts including the most important one: temperament and came good with flying colours. Well done.”

And there were some final moments in the game.
