Torrential rains expected in Karachi from July 24 to 26: Met Dept

KARACHI: Light rain has hit different areas of the city since early morning, turning the weather pleasant. The Met Department has predicted heavy rain from July 24 to 26.

Light and heavy rain occurred today in New Karachi, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Orangi Town, Malir, Sadar, Shahra-e-Faisal, Shah Faisal Colony, Airport, and other adjoining areas.

The roads became slippery due to the rain and several accidents involving motorcyclists were reported. According to the Met Department, similar moderate rain can occur in the city in the next few days intermittently.

On the other hand, heavy rain is expected in the city from July 24. The rainfall system will enter Karachi on the night of July 23, Saturday, the effect of which will be seen the next day. The system is expected to last till July 26.

The first spell of monsoon wreaked havoc in the city during Eid-ul-Adha. Roads were inundated with water, while six people died of electrocution. At least one labourer died due to a wall collapse in Korangi. Two others die of drowning during the rains.

On the second day of Eid, DHA received unprecedented amounts of rainfall at 126mm while the lowest rainfall was recorded in Surjani Town at 14.4 mm.

Many roads were closed, including the Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway, due to urban flooding. Drains were slow to take in the water and many areas remained inundated days after the rain had ended.

Most areas of Pakistan received heavy rainfall during this monsoon season. A total of 165 people were killed, 38 of which were from Sindh.

Punjab

At least one woman died and a man got wounded after the roof of the house collapsed during heavy rain in Hafizabad, the city which is famous for its rice production.

The recent monsoon spell broke the sweltering hot weather trend in the province.

Rain water entered populated areas after the dam broke due to flooding nullahs in Taunsa Sharif. Low-lying areas in Jahanian, Rajanpur, Jalalpur Pirwala, Khanewal, and Choubara were inundated after heavy rain.

The Met Office has predicted more rain in the upper and central parts of the province in the next 24 hours.
