Quetta devastated by rains, 45 killed, emergency declared

QUETTA: Torrential rains caused destruction in different parts of Balochistan including Quetta, taking the lives of forty-five people according to PDMA report.

The hill torrents from Harnai have flooded the city and low-lying areas. Mud houses and katcha houses in Kohlu were destroyed.

A land route connecting Balochistan and Punjab was cut off by landsliding at Fort Munro, a hilly area. Thousands of vehicles and dozens of passenger coaches are stranded.

The death toll in the country due to rain rose to 80, with Balochistan experiencing the brunt of the damage; 45 people died in total, including 11 men, 18 women, and 16 children, while 147 people were injured. A total of 241 houses were demolished across the province.

Deaths occurred in Bolan, Quetta, Zhob, Duki, Khuzdar, Kohlu, Kech, Mastung, Harnai, Qila Saifullah, and Sibi. An emergency has been declared in Quetta.

Heavy rains lashed Dera Bugti where the district administration issued an alert. Residents living near streams were directed to safer places.

The rain destroyed the Kakar Khurasan Dam, while the Duki Dam cracked. Roads began to look like canals as water accumulated in the streets.

In Sunheri, a bridge was swept away due to the flooding, while power was cut off in Kohlu, effectively disconnecting it from the rest of Balochistan.

In Ghizer, the death toll from lightning and landslides rose to 8. Drains overflowed in Rahim Yar Khan. In Multan, a roof and a wall collapsed, taking the lives of 3 children and 2 women.

In Pishin, flash floods swept away three people. Two of the bodies have been recovered by PDMA divers, while the search for the third is still ongoing.

In Chaman, 3 people, including 2 children were killed due to collapsing walls. Two people in Zhob and four people in Qila Saifullah were swept away by the flood.

Two children drowned in the Noshki drain, while three people, including one woman, were killed due to the rain in the Pathankot area of Loralai. Three children died in Kech, two women in Mastung, and two miners died in Kacchi.

In Quetta, a collapsing wall and roof took the lives of six people, including three women. A boy and a girl were swept away by the flood in Kharotabad.

Two sisters drowned in Bhosa Mandi on the Eastern Bypass in Quetta, while one person drowned in Ganj Shukri Dam. A woman was electrocuted in Khilji Colony and a young man drowned in Khuzdar.

In Mansehra, Kagan Highway was closed at various places due to landslides. Police and rescue teams evacuated the tourists.

The Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in Quetta.
