A show-cause notice has been issued to city administrator Murtaza Wahab for the construction while also issuing a suspension from interfering in heritage sites.

The court has deemed the construction in violation of Heritage Laws.

‘Frere Hall should stay free for all’

Architect and activist Marvi Mazhar had filed a suit against the proposed revamp for the Frere Hall by the Guardians Trust. The trust had come about in 2019 as a public-private partnership between then-mayor Waseem Akhtar and architects, as well as citizens.

It is interesting to note, that for any construction to happen on heritage sites, a no-objection certificate has to be obtained from the Technical Advisory Committee on Heritage, one that the Guardians Trust did not possess.
