‘Sign of fascism’: Akbar S. Babar on PTI protest outside ECP

PTI founding member and ex-leader vows to see out the foreign funding case "till last breath"

PTI founding members and ex-party leader Akbar S Babar on Wednesday accused the former ruling party of trying to influence the country’s top electoral body by staging protests outside ECP offices across the country.

“A notice and legal action should be taken against them [PTI] because how is this possible that someone brings a group of people [outside the ECP office] and tries to influence judges,” Babar said while talking to reporters outside the ECP office in Islamabad.

The PTI founding member, , who parted ways with the PTI in 2015, opined that such actions set a bad precedent for the people and wondered whether it would lead the country in the direction of “street justice”.

“According to us this is fascism. These are the signs and way of working of fascist leaders like Hitler, Mussolini, and Francisco Franco,” he said, adding that it was “dangerous” for Pakistan.

Babar said: “I want to tell Imran Khan that I will follow up on the foreign funding case till my last breath.”

Speaking about case proceedings, Babar hailed the ECP’s decision to reject the PTI plea on hearing all parties’ funding cases together.

“During the proceedings, our lawyer said that this is like there are 10 murders. One murderer is caught but says you cannot judge me until you find the other murderers.”

Babar also cast doubts on the PTI’s decision to seek more time for submitting final arguments in the foreign funding case.

“We have time and again called for completing this case and the ECP should decide this case,” he said, “On one side, the PTI demands that ECP conduct early elections and on the other hand it demands the resignation of the chief election commissioner.”
