American Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has called for greater attention to Indian brutalities in the occupied parts of the Kashmir valley during a visit to Muzaffarabad as part of her Pakistan trip.

The Somali-American politician, while speaking to the media in AJK’s capital, said her visit would help her gain a better understanding of the ground realities and provide context to the many human rights reports that she has read about the region.

We are also reviewing the widescale anti-Muslim policies of [Indian PM Narendra] Modi’s regime, she said.

“I hope my trip [to AJK] will further highlight the Kashmir issue and more people will talk about it,” she said while urging human rights organisations to be more vocal on the issue.

Omar is on a four-day visit to Pakistan (April 20-24) during which she is scheduled to meet the the country’s civil and military leadership.

She visited former premier Imran Khan at his Bani Gala residence on Wednesday.

Later, she also met with President Arif Alvi at his official residence, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and newly-appointed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar.

Omar has also previously spoken on the Kashmir issue, including through her social media profiles, particularly in the wake of India’s decision to revoke the special status of the Indian occupied part of Kashmir.
