Muslim US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar arrives in Islamabad today on her first visit to the country during which she will meet the country’s senior leadership, reported Aaj News.

The outspoken lawmaker, who grew up in a refugee camp and made history by becoming the first Somali-American to be elected to the US Congress, is also expected to visit Lahore and Azad Kashmir during her trip to Pakistan.

The duration of her trip is not yet known.

Omar is a strong supporter of human rights and regularly raises her voice against Islamophobia. She is also a vocal critic of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his policies in Indian-occupied Kashmir.

She is a frequent target of right-wing groups most recently over a video she shared that was taken on a domestic American flight where people were singing songs praising Prophet Jesus Christ.

Her caption read, “I think my family and I should have a prayer session next time I am on a plane. How do you think it will end?”, hinting at the obvious difference in the treatment of Muslims in the West.
