It is no secret that Hollywood actress of Black Panther and Us fame, Lupita Nyong'o was in Karachi to attend a wedding of her friend Yale Drama class of 2012, Fisher Neal and visual artist Misha Japanwala.

Taking to Instagram, the actress put up a picture of what seems like a local bus at first glance but upon closer inspection, this scribe found that Lupita took a Super Savari ride across Karachi, sitting atop it at one point. Her Instagram stories, posted at least four to five days after the actual tour, showed her and another guest ducking to avoid branches as their bus thundered through the city.

Super Savari is a Karachi based tour service, that uses locally decorated buses to take you into the part of Karachi that you may not normally think of visiting.

Speaking to this scribe, Super Savari co-founder Jehanzeb Salim said it was a great experience to host Lupita and her guests, as the star was “super sweet and the vibe [owing to the recent wedding] was celebratory.”

Salim said one of the aims to establish Super Savari was to expose people to the many different layers that Karachi has to offer and one of the easiest ways to display the diversity of any country is through its arts and culture.

“I usually play some classic Coke Studio at the start of the ride to set the mood, with some tunes from Chakwal Group, which I am happy to report the Lupita as well as her guests really appreciated,” he said.

Lupita also carried a story on her official Instagram, with her head bobbing along to Ishq Aap Bhe Awalla featuring the Chakwal Group and Meesha Shafi.

“When foreigners come to the country, we usually restrict them and ensure that we hide the parts of Karachi that we deem imperfect. Foreigners are also hesitant to walk around the city, laughs, well as are people from Karachi mostly because they don't know where to go so I want to highlight the nicer parts of the city that are as important as, for example the Quaid-e-Azam’s mausoleum, but not as easily accessible.”

With this aim in mind, Salim took Lupita to places like the KPT building, which also has People’s Square close to it, which is a walking food street, as well as Denso Hall, one of the first libraries of Karachi. Both the locations offered a chance to the guests to not only take a stroll but also take pictures.

“The most memorable part of Lupita’s trip for me, had to be her warm, spirit,” Salim said.

The tour bus company has helped women beggars develop vocational skills to enable them to create livelihoods by selling keychains to guests that use the service.

The actress insisted on buying a lot, telling Salim “You better make sure we are their biggest sale up to date.”

Salim wanted the actor to take a little part of Pakistan with her, and ended up gifting her a book of art installations in the city from the Karachi Biennale 2017, a gift he thought was fitting to remind her how Karachi despite being dusty at best and dirty at worst, is a pulsing city with no single identity and many different layers of religion, culture and diversity.

But the book was not the only piece of Pakistan that Lupita took with her, as evident from pictures and videos emerging after the star supposedly left Pakistan. Not only did she enjoy the bus ride, calling Pakistan an aesthetic force, but also the henna applying ceremony at the star studded wedding. But perhaps the biggest initiation into a Pakistani wedding, almost a rite of passage if you will, has to be a choreographed dance number, which Lupita seemed to embrace wholeheartedly and very seriously as seen by the Instagram footage.
