Local bakery under fire for religious discrimination
A popular Karachi bakery is getting a lot of criticism on social media over their apparent refusal to write “Merry Christmas” on cakes, a claim that the bakery has vehemently denied.
According to one customer, a branch of the bakery located in Karachi’s upscale Defence locality refused to serve her. As per the customer, who took to social media to highlight the issue, the staff at the branch said they would not be catering to Christian customers in line with instructions received from their administration.
A representative of the bakery told Aaj Digital that the complaint was the result of a miscommunication as the bakery was out of icing, making it impossible to write anything on cakes.
The representative added that the customer in question has already been contacted with an apology tendered over the misunderstanding.
The customer has since uploaded screenshots of the apology from the bakery on their Instagram stories.
“Eid, rakhsha bandhan (Hindu festival) and even Christmas, we decorate all cakes and do not refuse any customers based on religion. This was a misunderstanding, which has been blown out of proportion,” the bakery’s customer care representative said.
