List: Top 5 US states hit hardest by COVID-19
Novel coronavirus has been ravaging the United States for several months now and showing no signs of stopping anytime soon. According to Johns Hopkins University, as of today, the US has reported a total of 9,487,467 COVID-19 cases. Also, at least 233,729 people have died due to coronavirus-related reasons.
The first case of COVID-19 in the US was reported 285 days ago on January 22nd. Since then the viral disease has changed the course of the history of the country. Just in the past 24 hours, the country reported 84,089 new confirmed cases and 557 deaths.
Coronavirus pandemic remained the most talked about issue in the Presidential elections held this week as people voted in huge numbers. President Trump and his supporters have maintained that the government has done its best to contain the spread of the virus. Democrats and Trump's critics have lambasted the federal government as they have failed to flatten the Covid curve.
When the Covid first hit the US, New York was the original epicenter. It took the New York administration several weeks to bring down the number of cases. As of November, Texas, California, and Florida have overtaken New York for total cases to date, though New York still has the highest death toll.
These are the top five worst-hit states of the US:
State - Total Cases - Total deaths
1) Texas - 959,811 - 18,771
2) California - 951,857 - 17,820
3) Florida - 821,123 - 16,922
4) New York - 515,815 - 33,556
5) Illinois - 443,803 - 10,216
As Americans count their ballots, public health experts believe that no matter who wins the Presidential election the challenge posed by pandemic will take several months to overcome as the national trajectory is still worsening.
