Covid-19: Pakistan reports less than 2,000 new cases for 9th straight day
New Coronavirus cases in Pakistan are declining consistently for the past couple of weeks or so. Evidence of this is that the country has reported less than 2,000 new cases for 9 consecutive days.
It's a quite dramatic change in the spread of the viral disease in Pakistan. Most public health experts and researchers had predicted that the country will see coronavirus peak in the July-August period. But instead, we have seen a significant decrease in the number of new cases in the country. In the last 24 hours, 1,226 people tested positive for the virus out of the 23,254 people who were tested.
The Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on health, Dr. Zafar Mirza says this has been made possible by the grace of God, the government's rapid response against the virus spread, and people embracing the 'new normal' by following SOPs put in place by authorities.
PM Imran Khan also credits his government's policy of 'Smart Lockdown' proving critical in flattening the COVID-19 curve in the country. The opposition says that the decrease in the number of tests is the only reason behind this decline in new cases. Stats tell otherwise as the testing capacity of the country has remained more or less constant in the past two months but the positivity rate has dropped significantly. The positivity rate reached the highest figure of 22% in mid-June and now it is around 6-8%, this proves that less testing is not the reason behind lesser new cases.
