How Pakistani drama serial 'Sabaat' is shadowing the importance of mental health?
Recently, a Pakistani drama serial titled 'Sabaat' has left the audiences anguished by portraying an iffy role of a psychiatrist. Allegedly, the serial depicts a romantic relationship between a client and a therapist.
People are calling out the serial's screenplay writers on multiple social media platforms especially Twitter for their sheer ignorance on the matter. Twitteraties have been very vocal about the issue and are taking the makers of the TV show to the cleaners. One Twitterati wrote this about the show starring Usman Mukhtar and Sarah Khan:
That's just wrong. A therapist won't meet you over coffee. There is decorum and we are supposed to facilitate the client. And it is highly unlikely for a therapist to fall for the client. Firstly, it is unethical. Secondly, the therapists are trained to be empathetic with u, never overestimate it to be more than that. Thirdly, a therapist has to free you from codependency, not to create another.
In Pakistan, there is already a great misunderstanding when it comes to treating mental health issues. Going to a therapist or a psychiatrist is looked down upon. Some mental disorders are taken awfully casually and the others are attributed to the lack of religious practices.
Previously, our media was involved in romanticizing mental disorders and now when they are finally acknowledging the need of a therapist, they are misleading the masses into believing that the therapy will kickstart your love life. Another critic tweeted:
A country, where visiting a therapist is a taboo, this relationship between the therapist and the client would be damaging.
Meanwhile, there is a talk that the psychiatrist from the show will never act on his feelings and the audience should wait for the storyline to unfold. IT IS STILL WRONG to portray a distorted image of a therapist in a drama serial. It's because when there is already little awareness about the subject of mental wellbeing among masses, a misrepresentation will do only harm to the subject.
