COVID-19: India becomes the third-most affected country as cases soar to 700k
The number of COVID-19 cases exceeded 700,000 in India today, making it the third worst-hit country by Coronavirus. India has overtaken Russia on the list of most covid infections and now only USA with 2.9 million cases, and Brazil with 1.6 million cases have more cases than India.
The second-largest nation of the world has seen a surge in coronavirus infections in the last few weeks as lockdown restrictions were lifted across the country. Nowadays, on average, over 20k new cases are being reported daily in India. In the last 24 hours, India reported 23,932 new cases, slightly lesser than the previous day's tally of 24,015.
India has seen eight times the number of cases as China, that has a similar-sized population and was the original epicenter of coronavirus outbreak. The number of people that have succumbed to the viral disease in India is 19,782 while the tally for recovered patients is 429,907.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his administration have been criticized by the opposition parties of the country for their delayed action against the virus outbreak in India. Public health experts believe the country is yet several weeks away from hitting its 'covid peak' and thousands of more covid fatalities are expected in the coming weeks.
