Anwar Mansoor resigns as Attorney General

Anwar Mansoor has resigned on Thursday from the position of Attorney General of Pakistan.

The Pakistan Bar Council had demanded his resignation over some comments he made regarding Supreme Court judges, for which he had been reprimanded by the court as well, Anwar Mansoor has tendered his resignation to President Arif Alvi for approval

Anwar Mansoor said that he has submitted his resignation on the request of Pakistan Bar Council (PBC).

 “I am resigning on the demand of Pakistan Bar Council. My community asked for the resignation so I had to submit it,” he said in a statement.

The PBC had demanded his resignation over some statement made by him regarding Supreme Court judges, for which he had been reprimanded by the court as well.

The Supreme Court (SC) had ordered Mr. Mansoor to either produce evidence supporting his controversial statement or submit a written apology.

Mr. Mansoor in his resignation stated,

"I note with profound regret that the Pakistan Bar Council, of which I am the chairman, has demanded through its press release dated February 19, 2020 that I resign forthwith from the office of the attorney-general for Pakistan.

He added, "Being a life member of the Karachi Bar Association, Sindh Bar Association and the Supreme Court Bar Association, and having previously served as the advocate-general Sindh, the attorney-general for Pakistan and a judge of the High Court of Sindh, I stand with my brothers and colleagues at the Bar and I wish to reaffirm my faith in the highest principles of integrity and professional excellence that the Pakistan Bar Council has always stood for.

He was appointed judge of the Sindh High Court in October 2000, but resigned from the position on Oct 3, 2001, to rejoin law practice.
