Runners and musicians may have better functioning brains
WEB DESK: It is obvious that keeping one self busy in different activities is healthy whether it is an outdoor or an indoor activity. Researchers have found out that playing musical instrument can impact on mind as positively as the running.Â
According to the team of University of Arizona, repetitive activities such a playing piano or running impacts on brain functionality. Many researches have been done in this regard but their samples were older adults. So, there was need to figure out what is occurring in younger brains.
Two groups were taken, 11 runners and 11 non runner who had not performed any intense work out for a year. Therefore, it was gained from this sample that brain functionality of runners in the areas of planning, decision making, and multi-tasking is improved than non runners.
However, the outcome was same when the research was done on sample who plays piano and who does not play piano.
The researchers suggest that running could engaged the brain in the same way as playing musical instrument even if it seems that it does not require much thought.
Anthropologist David Raichlen says, the activities that may appear repetitive to people actually involves complex cognitive functions such as decision making and planning.
The areas of mind of runners where we saw prominent impact are the areas that impacted as we aged, added Raichlen.
Hence, the active, healthy and better functioning mind is all a person needs first, the rest comes afterwards.
