Overseas Pakistanis: suggestion of electronic voting facility approved
The sub committee of Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms has approved the suggestion to give overseas Pakistanis the right to vote.
The committee met under its convener MNA Dr Arif Alvi on Monday to review the electronic voting facility to overseas Pakistanis during the general elections 2018. It was an in-camera meeting.
The officials of National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) informed the committee that a proposal to facilitate overseas Pakistani by introducing online voting has been floated by the NADRA.
Under this scheme, at initial stage, national identity card for overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) holders as well as foreign passport holders of Pakistani origin would register themselves as voters with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
A secret code would be issued to them upon getting registered with the ECP.
In general elections 2018, the overseas voters would be able to cast their online votes through secret code issued by the ECP.
According to the ECP data, eight million overseas Pakistanis would enjoy the facility of polling their votes online. The final report of the subcommittee would be shared with the Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reformson Tuesday (today).
