Sharmeen elucidates Rukhsana’s claims

KARACHI: Oscar winning Pakistani documentary filmmaker, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, refuted Rukhsana's claims and has forwarded her response clarifying her position with respect to the mainstream trend on twitter #JusticeforRukhsana.

Sharmeen, while talking to Aaj TV, stated that Rukhsana's claims are baseless and do not carry any weight. Regarding the house claims, Sharmeen said that no legal or verbal commitment was made to Rukhsana or indeed any of the film subjects regarding a house or any other material compensation.

"The only statement made with regards to this was that when the film is aired our hope is that it spurs awareness and drives people and organizations to come forward and help. In fact, to this end an international donor did step in to support Rukhsana and purchase a house for her in her own name," added Sharmeen

Sharmeen also explained that the donor did not want to give her cash in place of a house as they felt it may be dangerous for her thinking that the victim would become more vulnerable to being exploited by her husband who had committed the crime in the first place.

According to Sharmeen, Rukhsana's husband and family were more keen to take money and hence they rejected the house.

With respect to financial realization,  Sharmeen said that they had promised Acid Survivor Foundation (ASF) 5% of net profit, which they would have received once profits were realized. She added that Zakia and Rukhsana (the two acid victims in her documentary) were also to receive all profits of the documentary's sale or screening in Pakistan but that did not happen as the movie was never aired in Pakistan as Sharmeen suspended her plans owing to Rukhsana’s request.

"With regards to Rukhsana’s surgery and it not being done: Dr. Jawad was in Pakistan when he performed plastic surgery on Zakia the leading subject in the film. Rukhsana however refused to undergo this plastic surgery," Sharmeen told Aaj TV.

Sharmeen finally concluded that as filmmaker, her job is to connect donors with victims and create awareness of the evil within the society. She was really glad that her point reached the masses and she prayed for Rukhsana's prosperity.

She added that she was really distressed about false accusations being hurled at her. "It is sad to have fingers pointed on unfulfilled promises by fellow countrymen when I know that we have done our utmost with integrity to highlight the issue and I hope as Pakistanis rise to the occasion and that we stop always blaming each other for societal injustice instead of trying to correct it," said the Oscar winning Pakistani filmmaker.

Chinoy had tweeted that Rukhsana is currently living with her husband and in-laws who attacked her.

Sharmeen has also posted her response to the allegations on her Twitter account @sharmeenochinoy.
