Morsi victorious in Presidential elections - Egypt

CAIRO: Mohammad Morsi of Muslim Brotherhood came out victorious in the Presidential elections. The results were announced on Sunday evening.

Mohammad Morsi, captured 51.73% votes equaling an amount of around 13.23 million votes.

Hosni Mubarak's Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq, the contesting candidate, bagged a total of 12.35 million votes.

Mohammad Morsi won a close election battle against his rival. Tahrir square was bursting with energy as thousands gathered to cheer the victory of Morsi following the announcement of the results.

The country's last four presidents over the past six decades have all came from the ranks of the military. This is the first time modern Egypt will be headed by an Islamist and by a freely elected civilian
