Shakira Nominated For Prince Of Asturias Award

Shakira has received a nomination for this year's Prince of Asturias Concord award for her humanitarian work.

The Colombia singer and UNICEF good will ambassador founded the Barefoot Foundation, a non-profit devoted to making education universally available, when she was 18 and also helped launch Latin America in Solidarity Action.

The Prince of Asturias Foundation, in Spain, gives out the awards annually to individuals, groups or institutions that make significant achievements in several categories including arts, international cooperation and social sciences.

The Concord honor, which has been given out since 1986, is awarded to those "whose work has significantly contributed to fostering peace, the defense of human rights, freedom, solidarity, the safeguarding of heritage, or, in general, the progress of humanity."

Shakira has received awards for her humanitarian work in the past, including a United Nations medalfor her significant achievements as a goodwill ambassadorship for UNICEF.

If awarded, Shakira will be the first person in the entertainment industry to receive the Concord honor.

Past recipients of the Concord award include Stephen Hawking (1989), J.K. Rowling (2003), and most recently, the Fukushima 50, the employees of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant who remained on-site after all other workers were evacuated.
