Contaminated water threats life in Keenjhar lake

Keenjhar/Kalri Lake was supposed to be largest freshwater lake in Pakistan but due to high amount of contaminated water the marine life in it facing serious dangers.

According to the reports, Since 15 years The contaminated water of RBOD mixed into the fresh water which has been killing the marine life continuously.

Many of the local fishermen have lost their jobs, saying that the lake has now produce 80,00 kg fish instead of 19,500kg .

Keenjhar lake plays a substantial ecological role in the functioning of the Indus River basin. It also provides water to the lands of Jhangra, Sehwan, Bobak and Shah Hassan.

It is extremely important for a wide variety of breeding, passage and wintering waterbirds. The mid-winter waterbird counts of the late 1980s averaged 140,000 birds per winter.

The Sindh government started a project in 2006 to clean contaminated water of the lake but the project remained unsuccessful.
