PM expects gratitude from judges; as Intra-court hearing progresses

Supreme Court begins the hearing on Prime Minister's appeal on the contempt of court case, today.

The hearing is conducted under a larger bench of 8 judges lead by Cheif Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.

Aitzaz Ahsan who is facing the judges after a long period of 5 years said that the Prime minister's action were directly related to his capacity as the PM and if he is charged with contempt of court it will be Yusuf Raza Gilani, not the prime minister who will go to jail.

The PM's appeal says that it is ironic to send a democratically elected PM to jail, who also released detained judges of the supreme court even before becoming the chief executive.

On Prime Minister's remarks "I reinstated the Judges, I freed them"

Justice Pervaiz replied,  “We refused to take oath under the PCO and did not request anyone to reinstate us”

The Cheif Justice also articulated his discontent on few of the remarks made in the PM's draft of appeal.

The intra-court appeal was  submitted by Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan on behalf of the Prime Minister, based on 200 pages with 54 legal points.

The appeal explains the reason why Prime Minister Gilani did not write the letter to Swiss Administration. It was because his expert legal council advised against it, for which he should not be held in contempt of the court and all charges should be dropped against him.

The larger bench is formed by Justice Jawad S Khawaja, Justice Shakir Ullah Jaan, Justice Saqib Nisar, Justice Ameer Muslim Hani, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain, Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Justice Tariq Pervaiz headed by Cheif Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.
