PM contempt case hearing adjourned till Feb 1
A seven-member Bench of the Supreme Court on Thursday gave 12 days to Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani for submitting his detailed reply in the contempt of court case regarding the non-implementation on the NRO judgement and adjourned the hearing till February 1.
A seven-judge Bench of the apex court, presided over by Justice Nasirul Mulk on the request of Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, the counsel of Prime Minister Gilani, adjourned the hearing till February 1.
The court also exempted the Prime Minister to appear before the court in person on the next hearing as Prime Minister Gilani appeared before the court Thursday in accordance with the notice, issued to him by the seven-member Bench in the contempt of court case.
Earlier, the Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani who appeared before the court said the President enjoys complete  immunity, not only in Pakistan but also in the world as enunciated  by the Constitution.
Giving his point of view in the Supreme Court on the contempt of court case, he said that he could not even think of dishonouring or disgracing the court.
The Prime Minister said he appeared in person to comply with court orders that indicated his respect and honour for the court.
About writing letter to Swiss Courts for opening of the cases, the Prime Minister said the President enjoys immunity within Pakistan and abroad, therefore, he did not write letter to the Swiss court.
He said the leaders of PPP always respected and honoured the courts and complied with its orders.
Gilani said Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Begum Nusrat Bhutto also appeared before the courts that indicated the respect and honour of these courts by the leaders.
He said the presence of leaders of Coalition Partners in the court, is the reflective of their respect for judiciary.
The Prime Minister said Benazir Bhutto was a great leader and politician, and he was following her mission.
He said the country is united and integrated due to the 1973 Constitution that has been restored by the present government in its original form.
Justice Asif Khosa, a member of the seven-member bench of the Supreme Court, appreciating presence of Prime Minister Gilani in the court, said it indicated that there is rule of law as the Chief Executive of the country appeared in the court.
He said he and President Asif Zardari had to face imprisonment but they never did any dishonour to the courts.
The Prime Minister along with other leaders and his Cabinet members attended the court proceedings and personally presented his point of view before the Bench.
Prominent political leaders who were present on this occasion included Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Asfand Yar Wali, Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir Chaudhry Abdul Majid, Chief Ministers of Sindh and Baluchistan Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Nawab Aslam Raisani respectively, Governors of KPK and the Punjab Barrister Masood Kausar and Sardar Muhammad Latif Khan Khosa, Chief Minister-Gilgit Baltistan Syed Mehdi Shah and a number of federal ministers.
The Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani reached Supreme Court along with his lawyer Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, Members of the Federal Cabinet and other PPP leaders.
Prime Minister Gilani is the third prime minister in political and democratic history of Pakistan who is appearing in the Supreme Court in the contempt notice as Shaheed Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also appeared before the Apex court in such notices.
Gilani appeared before the seven-member bench of the Supreme Court to face contempt notice on the issue of re-opening of cases under the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).
Gilani announced his decision to appear before the court in his address to the National Assembly on Monday.
