Punjab: Strike, protest against worst power outages
People enraged by lengthy daily power cuts protested in a number of cities in Punjab, particularly in Lahore, the provincial capital of Punjab as the power crisis worsened.
According to the PEPCO sources, The electricity shortfall has reached to 8,900MW. While the electricity consumption has increased over the years, but the governments ahs ailed to plan for the future.
The people of other cities including Sialkot, Pak pattan, Toba Tek Singh, etc also took out a rally against unprecedented loadshedding. The protesters attacked a Wapda complaint centre at Old Town Hall and damaged furniture, forcing its staff to escape. They also attacked the city police post and broke its windows..
According to reports, protestors in a Lahore surrounded a police station and pelted it with stones, forcing police to fire into the air and use tear gas shells to control them.
In Faisalabad, protesters attacked Fesco field offices. The residents of Jhang Road, Samundri Road, Sargodha Road, Jhal Khanoana, Ghulam Muhammadabad and other localities blocked traffic for many hours by burning tyres on the roads.
The situation is even worse in Punjab: hundreds of factories have been forced to close down, and protestors take to the streets almost daily to raise their voices against the situation, but to no avail.
The protestors chanted slogans against President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and Wapda. Some of them misbehaved with PML-N MNA Khwaja Muhammad Asif and raised slogans against him when he was passing from Rangpura Chowk in his vehicle.
