Karachi violence: SC adjourns hearing till Tuesday
Supreme Court of Pakistan Monday directed Attorney General to place on record requisite reports from Inter Services Intelligence, Military Intelligence & Intelligence Bureau on investigation into incidents of targeted killings in Karachi.
A special five-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and comprizing Justice Anwaz Zaheer Jamali, Justice Ghulam Rabbani, Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmany & Justice Amir Hani Muslim
gave this direction when Attorney General, Moulvi Anwarul Haq did not submit reports of intelligence agencies containing reasons for target killings & which elements were involved.
Taking suo moto notice on media reports on law and order situation in Karachi, CJP had formed five-member bench to hear human rights case on incidents of target killings in Karachi.
Attorney General Moulvi Anwarul Haq appeared with IG Police Sindh Wajid Ali Durrani before apex court.
IG Police submitted reports of Sindh Police Special Branch & Federal Investigation Agency on number of target killings in Karachi, action taken & arrest of accused.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry expressed dissatisfaction over reports submitted by Chiefs of Sindh Police Special Branch & FIA.
IG Wajid Durrani submitted 20 target killer suspects were taken into custody by police and joint operation by Rangers & Police was launched in most of affected areas. He informed six Baloch were killed in LyariTown, which subsequently led to widespread violence across the city.
IG submitted incidents of abducting youths, murdering them brutally & throwing their bodies packed in gunny bags. Some groups used to collect extortion in Lyari, but more groups joined in last three years.
He stated Police and Rangers arrested nine target killers including Kamran Madhoori, Sohail Commander, others and seized weapons in large quantity. He said criminals were using automated weapons, rocket launchers to forcibly collect extortion in form of Fitra or Zakat.
Chief Justice questioned: “We want to know, where so many people were killed, why they were killed and causes of such killings.â€
Former Federal Minister Senator Babar Awan, CCPO Karachi Saud Mirza, Advocate General Sindh Abdul Fattah Malik, Prosecutor General Sindh Shahadat Awan were also present.
Awami National Party, Jamat-e-Islami, nationalist Awami Tehrik party and Sindh Bachao Committee filed applications praying to become intervener in this case.
They submitted innocent citizens and activists of their parties were killed and prayed to allow their applications to become party in main proceedings.
The apex court adjourned hearing till August 30, 2011.
