Authorities say a head-on collision between two buses traveling along a pothole-rutted rural highway in northern Nigeria has killed at least 33 people.

Boyi Ali Maigari, a unit commander for the Federal Road Safety Commission in Yobe state, told The Associated Press that the crash happened Tuesday afternoon.

Maigari blamed the crash on the poor roads and the drivers traveling without proper caution.
