17 killed in Philippines road accident
Seventeen people have been killed after a truck smashed into a crowd of revellers and parked vehicles in the southern Philippines, police said on Sunday.
The truck, carrying gravel and sand, lost its brakes on Saturday as it was negotiating down a slope and plowed into the crowd in the village of Makilala in North Cotabato province.
Several people were killed instantly but others later died of their injuries, local police said.
Makilala was also the scene of carnage three weeks ago, when a powerful bomb believed planted by militants exploded in the town's plaza, killing 12 people and wounding dozens.
