PIMS cardiac surgeon Prof Dr Shahid Nawaz Malik expires

ISLAMABAD: Cardiac surgeon and head of cardiology department at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Prof Dr Shahid Nawaz Malik, expired on Friday at Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Rawalpindi.
The head of the cardiology department at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences was shot and critically injured on the premises of the hospital on February 14 by two unknown assailants.
Prof Dr Shahid Nawaz Malik was battling for his life. He received medical treatment earlier at PIMS and remained admitted at ICU than shifted to CMH Rawalpindi.
Prof Malik was targeted when he came out of the private ward and was walking towards his vehicle at about 3:30 pm.
Two men appeared in front of the cardiology ward, adjacent to the private wing, and one of them fired a bullet on the doctor and escaped towards the residential block of hospital.
The injured was taken inside the hospital and provided with medical assistance. Later, he was operated upon and shifted to the Surgical ICU, where his condition remained critical.
Dr Wasim Khawaja from PIMS said that Cardiologist Shahid Nawaz Malik received a bullet at the back of his head called posterior fossa.
Though, he was operated upon, the damage caused by the bullet was irreparable, he added.
Meanwhile, leaders of several political parties and representatives of doctors community expressed sympathies with the family members of Dr Shahid and prayed Almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in eternal peace.
