Karachi residents protest against persistent traffic congestion

Residents of New Karachi staged a protest at 4K Chowrangi today against heavy traffic congestion, specifically targeting water tankers and dump trucks. Protesters blocked the road, halting the movement of these vehicles, with a large crowd gathering around the intersection.

The protesters allege that water tanker drivers lack both licenses and permits, and claim that dump trucks should not be allowed on the roads after 11 pm. A dump truck driver, while claiming to possess both a license and road permit, stated that these documents were in the possession of the vehicle owner and he had none on his person. He added that they only operate during the daytime.

The protest has prompted calls for a response from relevant authorities regarding the influx of heavy traffic in Karachi, and demands for stricter enforcement of existing curfews on heavy vehicle movement.

Faizan Ali, a local social activist, stated that residents face daily hardships due to the heavy traffic. He reported that previous protests have yielded no results and urged traffic police to take action against dump trucks, similar to the enforcement against motorcyclists.

A woman participating in the protest added that motorcycles are already a significant hazard, and dump trucks frequently cause accidents. The protest highlights ongoing concerns about traffic management and safety in Karachi’s densely populated areas.
