Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys, has reiterated his controversial views on extended work hours, encouraging Indian youth to prioritize work over achieving a work-life balance. In a recent interview, he referenced Prime Minister Modi’s work ethic, advocating for a dedicated work culture and sharing his own rigorous schedule during his time at Infosys.
Murthy stated, “I am sorry, I have not changed my view,” and emphasized that he would hold onto this belief for life. He previously sparked a nationwide debate by suggesting that young Indians should aim for 70-hour work weeks to enhance national productivity. He noted that India’s work productivity is among the lowest globally, urging the youth to adopt a mindset of dedication towards their country.
Reflecting on his own experience, the 78-year-old shared that he worked from 6:20 AM to 8:30 PM, six and a half days a week until his retirement. He expressed disappointment with India’s transition from a six-day to a five-day work week, insisting that hard work is indispensable, regardless of one’s intelligence.
Murthy has faced both criticism and support for his views, which he believes are essential for addressing the challenges faced by the nation. He mentioned that his wife, Sudha Murty, supports his stance, recalling her father’s similar work ethic.
Despite the mixed reactions, Murthy remains steadfast in his belief that increased productivity is vital for India to compete with rapidly developing countries, advocating for a cultural shift towards longer working hours and reduced bureaucratic hurdles.
