The US Embassy in Colombo has issued a travel advisory to its citizens, warning of a credible threat of an attack targeting the Arugam Bay area, popular tourist destination.
The advisory states that due to the serious risk, travel restrictions have been imposed on embassy personnel for Arugam Bay, effective immediately and until further notice.
US citizens are strongly encouraged to avoid the Arugam Bay area until further notice, according to the embassy.
In response to the anticipated influx of tourists in the upcoming season, the Police Media Division announced that special security measures will be implemented.
The statement noted that the Public Security Ministry, along with police and intelligence units, is developing a security plan to ensure the safety of visitors, especially in light of the current situations in the Middle East and other regions.
A hotline, 1997, has been established for inquiries starting today.
However, the police statement did not address the warning issued by the US Embassy.
