Alejandro Toledo, the former president of Peru who served from 2001 to 2006, has been sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison for his involvement in a corruption case linked to the Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht.
The National Superior Court of Specialized Criminal Justice in Lima announced the ruling on October 21, 2024, following extensive legal battles over Toledo’s extradition from the United States.
Toledo was accused of accepting $35 million in bribes from Odebrecht in exchange for facilitating the construction of a highway in Peru.
The Odebrecht scandal has been a significant corruption issue across Latin America, with the company admitting to widespread bribery to secure government contracts.

After years of legal proceedings, Toledo was extradited to Peru in 2022 and has been in preventive detention since.
