A toddler who was brought dead to a Karachi hospital with multiple marks of beatings died of natural causes and not due to torture, doctors at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital ruled on Thursday.
Three-year-old Amna was brought to a government hospital in North Karachi by her mother, who fled after leaving the body, while her father claimed the child died of torture meted out to her by her mother.
According to the medico-legal officer (MLO), the girl’s body showed old injury marks, while the girl’s father, Shahbaz, also confirmed that there were no fresh injury marks on her body.
A search is underway for the mother who left the girl’s dead body at the hospital and fled.
The police have recorded the statement of the girl’s father.
The woman left the 3-year-old girl’s body at the Sindh Government Hospital in the New Karachi UP Mor area and fled. The body was then brought to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital by the child’s father.
Amna’s father blamed his wife for the child’s death. He said that he had married a woman named Kanwal four years ago, and they had separated two months ago.
He said that he received a call from an unknown number that Amna’s body was present at the Edhi Home in Sohrab Goth.
Observing the injury marks on her daughter’s face, she brought the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Shahbaz accused his estranged wife Kanwal of killing his daughter.
However, the police stated that the victim had old injury marks on her face and neck, and the exact cause of Amna’s death will be determined after the post-mortem examination.
