As India gears up to play in the World Cup final, a majore rival of the Bharatiya Janata Party has accused the party of ‘saffronising’ cricket.
Mamata Banerjee, who has been serving as the as the chief minister of West Bengal since 2011, recently said that the BJP regime had even turned the Indian cricket team’s practice kits to orange.
“We are proud of our Indian players and I believe they will be the world champion. But even their dress has been turned to saffron when they practice. They used to wear blue earlier,” Banerjee said in a speech in Kolkata on Friday.
“Now everything is turning saffron!” she added.
She went on to say that even metro stations in India are now being painted in the ruling party’s colours.
Banerjee said that Narendra Modi tries to put his name wherever possible, an apparent reference to the Modi stadium in Ahmedabad where the World Cup final will be played.
The Bengali politician has been a key opponent of Modi and has even accused him of scripting the Pulwama attack in the past.
