The Election Commission of Pakistan is reported to have been considering announcing January 28 of next year as the date for the general elections, sources said on Friday.

In this regard, the top electoral body is expected to inform the relevant institutions within the next two days, they added.

The ECP is also set to apprise the SC after the top court sought the ECP’s response in the case of timely elections.

The development came a day after the ECP strongly denied impressions that general elections could see a further delay in the country.

In a statement, the ECP said that President Arif Alvi’s comments in a recent interview had created an impression that a further delay in elections could be on the cards.

The statement added that there was no chance of elections being delayed.

On October 25, President Alvi had said in an interview that he did not expect elections to be held in January. However, he had expressed hope that the Supreme Court would likely decide the matter in a balanced manner.
