Prison hearing: Imran Khan to remain in jail for another 14 days

A special court has ordered former prime minister Imran Khan to remain in jail for another 14 days until September 26 when the court meets again in the cipher case.

The court resumed hearing the case inside the District Jail Attock on Wednesday as Khan’s 14-day remand ended.

Judge Abu Alhasnaat Zulqurnain, who arrived at the jail early morning, extended the judicial remand for another 14 days.

The Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification allowing the hearing to be held at the Attock Jail on the court’s request. The request was made citing ‘security reasons’.

Imran Khan’s legal team comprising 9 lawyers was also allowed into the jail.

On Tuesday, the Islamabad High Court reserved judgement in a petition filed by Imran Khan against the hearing being held in jail.

Imran Khan’s lawyer had argued that a trial can only be shifted to another province by the Supreme Court and not through the orders of a chief commissioner.

Imran has also applied for bail in the case but proceedings on September 7 ended without result as the judge was on leave.

The PTI chief remains incarcerated in the Attock jail since August 5 when he was arrested from his Lahore residence after being sentenced to a three-year jail term. The sentence was later suspended by Islamabad High Court. However, Khan was arrested in the cipher case. He faces charges of leaking the diplomatic cable sent by then-Pakistan Ambassador to the US Asad Majee in March 2022.

The case under Official Secrets Act was registered in mid August.
