Italian police unearthed the body of Saman Abbas, an 18-year-old girl of Pakistani origin, who went missing a year and a half ago, in the rural area of Emilia Romana.
The police said that a substantially intact body emerged, which has been well preserved considering the depth in which it was buried for over a year and a half.
Saman, disappeared last year after reportedly being pressured into an arranged marriage with an elder cousin in Pakistan.
She was last seen in April 2021 by neighbours near her family’s home in Novellara, a small town near the city of Reggio Emilia, north Italy.
Saman’s father, Shabbir Abbas, was reportedly detained after a tip-off from Italian authorities and was questioned by investigators in Islamabad.
According to media reports, Abbas was being sought by Italian police on a charge of killing his daughter.
Italy has already arrested Saman’s uncle after his extradition from France.
The body was found on the advice of the girl’s uncle Danish Hasnain, who is in prison and accompanied the investigators to that ruined farmhouse in Novellara. It was about three meters deep under a layer of debris and rubble, the Italian police said.
Five family members are due to go on trial for kidnapping, murder, and concealing the body.
