Load-shedding to decrease substantially during Eid: energy minister

Federal Minister for Energy Khurram Dastgir has assured Pakistanis of a clear reduction in load-shedding during Eid-ul-Azha.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday in Islamabad, Dastgir said water level in the dams was rising due to rains in the country. He added Pakistan was currently facing a power shortfall of 6,000 to 7,000 megawatts.

With gas-fired power plants now being run on alternative sources and the improvement in water level in dams more power would be generated, he said.

"We are refueling the Karachi nuclear power plant, which will add 1100 MW to the national grid."

The energy minister said there has been progress on talks regarding import of coal from Afghanistan.

"Efforts are afoot to make coal available for Sahiwal Coal Power Plant. Three trains full of coal have arrived in Sahiwal for which we are grateful to the Afghan government."
