Today’s Google Doodle for Pakistan honours the slain activist, Perween Rehman on what would have been her 65th birthday.
The doodle is Google’s unique way of celebrating people, countries or important developments across the world. The doodle you see is linked to the location of your browser, which means someone sitting in America may not be graced with Rehman’s picture and details.
Rehman was also an urban planner and served as the director of Orangi Pilot Project Research and Training Institute.
She was murdered on March 13, 2013, after refusing to give up land associated with the Orangi Pilot Project to Awami National Party leaders Ayaz Swati and Raheem Swati. The two had hired Taliban militants to kill Rehman.
The last doodle specifically for Pakistan honoured late actor Moin Akhtar on December 24, 2021, which would have been his 74th birthday. Google Doodles also dedicated an illustration on Pakistan’s Independence Day.
