Absar Alam resign from PEMRA chairmanship after LHC verdict

LAHORE: Chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), Absar Alam relinquished his post after Lahore High Court (LHC) declared his appointment as Chairman of PEMRA as null and void.

Judge of the LHC, Justice Shahid Karim announced the judgement on Monday stating that, the appointment was made in violation of rules and regulations.

Previously on November 29 of this year, the court had reserved its judgement on a petition challenging the appointment of Mr Alam as Pemra's chairman. The petition had been filed by a citizen, Munir Ahmad.

The petition cited that Alam had been drawing 15 Lakh salary in a month whereas the post of Pemra’s chairman was equal to the MP-I (Management Position) scale with the maximum salary for MP-I scale is Rs 450,000.

Ahmad had said the appointment of Alam was an open case of nepotism and a violation of merit on part of the federal government.

The Court also ordered to re-advertise the post of the Chairman PEMRA.
