Web Desk: Wearing cow mask in not a new fashion in India, but it is a silent protest against the growing crimes against women.
A campaign was launched by Sujatra Ghosh, a Delhi based photographer. Her aim of campaign is highlight the violence against women in India through the series of such photos in which women wear cow mask because they believe cows are given more value in India and people stand more for the protection of cows than women.
These started going viral as soon as they hit the internet, a women sits on a classroom bench writing on a sheet of paper, a young women poses in front of India Gate in New Dehli, a women on a street, performing all of the activities women do on daily basis but the weird thing is they all are wearing cow mask.
According to Sujatro Ghosh,
“People are getting lynched in this country to protect cows. But women's safety is neglected and violence against women is risingâ€. He asked, “If we can protect cows, then why not women?"
Mr. Ghosh said he has been flooded with offers from women to pose for his project since he began posting pictures on social media.
"I hope people get the message and realize we need to protect women with at least as much zeal as we protect cows," Mr Ghosh added.
Violence against women has been a spotlight issue since the 2012 when a student was raped on a bus. In 2015, more than 327,390 crimes against women registered. Police statistic 2016 revealed that atleast six raped and 12 molestations were reported daily. The Indian court has imposed a tough jail sentence for rapist, but the violence remains still the same.
India also has a severe sanction against people accused of harming cows. Many people have been stabbed to death on cow-related violence.
