IG Sindh orders enquiry about damage caused to heritage building

KARACHI : Inspector General of Police (Sindh) A.D.Khowaja here on Monday ordered impartial and transparent enquiry to ascertain alleged involvement of police officials in the demolition of a designated heritage building in Soldier Bazar area of Karachi.

A spokesman of Sindh Police said immediate and round the clock security of the heritage site, to prevent any further harm to its structure and premises, has also been ordered coupled with early completion of the enquiry.

Additional Inspector General (AIG) Aftab Pathan will investigate the incident during which four rooms and boundary wall of the heritage building, located next to a Government Secondary School was demolished.

The designated heritage buildings and sites as per law can not be demolished while no changes can also be made in their exterior or interior, without any formal approval and recommendation of duly notified experts' committee comprising seasoned professionals.

According to available information land grabbers and builders' mafia are quite active in grabbing the prime land in the once most posh area of the city with sizable number of sprawling, pre colonial area bungalows.

The mafia, allegedly in connivance of area police, attempted to raze the protected building under the garb of demolition of two of the class rooms of government schools, claimed to be in need of repair.-APP
