KARACHI: A sit-in continued in Karachi's Malir area on Monday, as protests erupted a day after arrests of religious and political leaders.
As reported, former senator Faisal Raza Abidi and religious leaders were detained by law enforcement personnel. They were apprehended after a resurgence of sectarian killings in the metropolitan, which has claimed scores of lives within a week, reported local media.
The traffic at National Highway has been blocked by the protesters, as skirmishes continue between the police and demonstrators. The police have pelted tear gas shells at the protesters, while protesters hurled stones at police in response, obstructing the traffic flow.
The ongoing situation has created hurdles in the daily activities as school children had to return home early, as they got stuck in a traffic jam.
However, talks between police and the crowd are ongoing.
Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah has earlier said that a zero tolerance policy would be adopted against those who disrupt law and order. "Action will be taken against anyone who takes the law into their own hands," he said.
Earlier, protests also took place on Sunday against the alleged 'desecration' of religious texts during a search operation. Rangers Sindh, however denied the allegations saying that the pictures posted on the social media by some miscreants are misleading and contrary to the facts.
The spokesman of the Rangers said that the purpose of such misleading activities was aimed at creating hurdles in the way of the on-going operation against the criminals.
He pointed out that the sanctity of mosques, Imambargahs and Madaris is maintained during the information based search regarding presence of miscreants.
