Coronary Heart Diseases or CHD are considered one of the major killers in today’s fast paced lifestyle, but thanks to improvement in healthcare a newly developed genetic risk tool identify individuals at risk of CHD much earlier and can lead to prevention.
The new device developed by researchers at University of Leicester could literally let off the previously time taking heart issue detections and I process could avoid the deadly heart attack.
The tool calculates one GRS or genomic risk score, which has been developed by studying over 49,000 SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms) Genetic factors. In order to simplify SNP’s- they are very small differences in a DNA that vary from person to person, reported The Deccan Herald.
“This study shows the potential benefits of using a genetic risk score over and above current methods to identify people at increased risk of coronary heart disease. We already know that CHD starts at an early age, several decades before symptoms develop, and preventative measures should ideally be applied much earlier, especially to those who are at increased risk,†said Nilesh Samani, Professor at the University of Leicester.
Now, the higher the GRS the greater the risk of developing CHD’s, for example people with a GRS in the top 20 per cent had an over 5-fold higher life-time risk of CHD than those in the bottom 20 per cent.
